Mark Turnbull

Mark has been a professional actor since 1982 after training at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art having been born in Zimbabwe and immigrating to the UK in 1977. He spend twenty years working in repertory, West End Theatre in the UK also completing many extensive foreign tours. He played major roles which included Jean Valjean ( Palace Theatre) and Frank’n’furter (Picadilly Theatre) ,Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar ( European tour), Che in Evita (7 Arts Harare) with the occasional play by Alan Ayckbourn and Terence Rattigan in repertory in such theatres as Birmingham Rep and Palace Theatre in Westcliff. As Frank’n’furter in the National UK Tour of the Rocky Horror show he played all the major commercial no 1 touring houses over several across the UK.

Mark spent the late ’90s as the Artistic Director of 7 Arts Theatre and Associate Director of REPS theatre in Harare returning there with his family in 1997. There he produced and directed many major musicals including Rocky Horror Show, The King and I, Annie Get your Gun, Queen -almost!, Cinderella (pantomime) Music of the Night, Guys and Dolls, Stagefrite!, along with several Shakespeare plays and youth theatre productions. He was also a theatre consultant for the Zimbabwe Ministry of Arts and Culture conducting theatre workshops in the high density suburbs of Harare empowering indigenous artists and also a board member of the National Theatre Organisation of Zimbabwe.

On his return to the UK in 2002 Mark ceased to work as a performer after twenty years and focused on his teaching acting and vocal work in several major London drama schools and also working with young people in several youth theatres. He broadened his teaching practise from aspiring young professionals to include any young people who were interested in drama and singing as a social and educational pursuit. He also continued to direct both professional, amateur and youth theatre productions.

In 2010, at the invitation of Cameron Mackintosh with many other past cast member of Les Miserables, Mark returned to the stage as a performer in the 25th Anniversary performances of Les Miserable at the O2 (he had also been a member of the 10th Anniversary company at the Albert Hall) ……………which then led to his return to the acting profession in 2011 playing character roles in musicals such as The Baker’s Wife, Jekyll and Hyde, Margeurite, How to Succeed in Business, Goodbye Girl, Billy, The Man Who had All the Luck , ……in pantomime with Cannon and Ball in 2016 at the Lyceum in Crewe, as an actor/musician in the major new musical by Tom Clarke (of the Enemy) and BAFTA winner Geoff Thompson of We Live and Die in these Towns at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry in 2018 and most recently as Joseph Buquet in Phantom of the Opera in Concert. He is fortunate to have worked with and still be working with many established and upcoming directors on new and revival productions.

His most recent directing credits are as director of My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music at the Cambridge Arts Theatre in 2019/20 which both were large scale community musical theatre projects.
