Your Voice and the Musical Theatre
Your voice is an integral part of who you are – both as a reflection of your personality both in life and on stage, or in front of the camera. Part of the process of finding your texture as an actor and singer is the connection and discovery of a voice that is unique to you. As an actor and singer, your voice needs to respond with a unique expressiveness, depth and clarity. There is a fundamental connection between the journey of the character, the ability to translate that thought process …………… and how effective the voice is in capturing the nuances and power of the role that is ultimately technical and spiritual in finding that connection….and then making it instinctive.
Mark has trained student professional actors in several major drama schools since 2003. His work with students is across disciplines with a particular emphasis on the musical theatre………..
His approach is holistic working on technical craft and pyschological techniques built up from his own extensive work as an actor and director in the musical theatre over nearly four decades of work.
At the centre of the work is the voice……. both spoken and sung…………..always starting with the breath, support, placement and then the creative impuse to express the thought process which responds emotionally to the journey of the character in action.
That journey in the musical theatre requires a heightened technique…… both vocally and emotionally that is resilient, focused and reliable in order to play eight shows a week. In the 21st century theatre, that level of physical and mental skill for long runs is almost unique to the musical theatre actor. Therefore the training required for such work requires a commitment to craft which is the core of Mark’s teaching.
